Hints and Tips from Kool Planet

At Kool Planet we believe in giving you the facts and allowing you to make up your own mind about the many different units available. There are other organisations who are not so scrupulous. Here are a few hints and tips that should help you navigate through the air conditioning minefield!

Watch out for old stock at cheap prices.

Over the last two years many manufactures, to move their stock, have had offers on air conditioning that contain R22 refrigerant . In 2008 R22 will be banned because of its CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) content and detrimental effect on the environment especially the ozone layer. The replacement refrigerant is R410a contains no chlorine, so it is ozone responsible. Plus, R410a allows higher efficiencies than R22, so it not only makes sense environmentally—it also makes sense from an economic standpoint.

Buy an air conditioning that contains refrigerant R410a.

Types of air conditioning unit

There are still manufactures still producing fixed speed coolers which are one of the earliest models produced and have no energy saving features.

Basic heat pump systems will deliver both heating and cooling but again have no real energy saving features.

Heat pump inverter systems are the most energy efficient systems on the market. They vary from manufacture to manufacture having energy efficiency ratings across a wide spectrum from A to E. This is a thinking machine and delivers the correct amount of cooling or heating when required.

Calculating heat requirement

An office is 8 metre by 8 metre giving a floor area of 64 square metres. The power in watts to cool one square metre of office area is 150 watts. Please note there are a number of other factors which have to be taken into account when determining the heating/cooling requirements of any indoor space (see our Design page).

8 x 8=64 sq.m x 150 watts = 9600 watts required which when rounded up comes to 10 kilowatts (kW).

10 kW cassette type indoor unit delivers power from 2.2 kW to 11 kW.

Office personnel start work at 9 am and the office temperature is 23 C so the air conditioning is turned on. The heat pump inverter set for a room temperature of 19 C starts up cooling at 2.2 kW having sensed the room temperature of 23 C. The unit gradually increases the amount of cooling until the control temperature of 19 C is achieved. This heat pump inverter system will then maintain the office temperature by either cooling or heating the room in a quiet efficient manner whilst everyone gets on with their work.
